Hi guys and gals,
This is going to be a short blog post.
We’ve just put the finishing touches on the new comment flagging system. If you see an inappropriate comment or if a user is being spammy, down vote their comment and click the report link. We will take appropriate action after reviewing the flagged content.
Sometime in the next few days, we should also have the “Extraordinarily Average” section up, so keep an eye out for that.
Finally, this weeks podcast is shaping up nicely and we will post it on Monday. Be sure to catch that either here or on iTunes.

Sorry, but I actually don’t agree with this change, specifically the fact that hidden comments are erased along with any replies below it. I would much rather have the spammers blocked instead of the hidden comments automatically erased, mainly because it gives badders more power. All it takes are four bored trolls. I liked having the option between seeing or hiding comments that were hidden. Sorry, we really appreciate what you guys are doing for us. Thanks.

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘hidden comments are erased’. Clicking bad on a comment should hide it, but you can see it again by clicking show/hide. Even reporting a comment shouldn’t make the comment disappear. What browser are you using?

The badded comments are not just hidden, they are gone. I like the old hide/show comment thing better.

I’m not sure if it’s still like this, but it’s not just me. We were all freaking out when comments began disappearing. But when I click “bad,” the “This comment is below average. Show/Hide. Report.” thing pops up, but after four bads, the entire comment and all its replies disappear. I’m not sure if that was done intentionally. Sorry, we really do appreciate how much attention you guys are giving us.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I love this website. Right now it isn’t working, so will it be back up soon? I’m sure you guys are just doing maintenance or something. I really like the report button because some users have gotten rediculous. There are about ten “Hitler”s and a lot of people who just use comment to advertise their websites/stories. I just hope that people who excessively bad don’t abuse this button. Thanks for making this website so great.

I like the idea of being able to report a comment(er), but I dislike that the comments are just automatically deleted.
In fact, I know for a fact that this morning people were badding everyone’s comment except one for fun, just so that it would say that there were 73 comments when only one was showing.
People are going to abuse this, and it’s already happening. In my opinion, the user should be blocked for offensive comments rather than the comment being taken away. I think that the Show/Hide thing is fine as far as the comment is concerned.
Instead of worrying about the comment, I think that your new Report system should revolve around the user itself. I think that the user should receive consequences for inappropriate comments, because taking away a comment does absolutely nothing to the user.

It looks like a other people are having the same problem. Comments shouldn’t be getting deleted. Just hidden. What browser are you using?

I’m using Safari.
The comments just seem to be disappearing after a certain number of bads. And everyone else is having the exact same problem, so I don’t *think* that it’s my browser.

Hi Mek. Heard you were confused about the comments getting badded. See, instead of hen just being ‘hidden’ and saying that they’re ‘below average’, they’ve been getting erased completely. Here’s proof/example: http://i47.tinypic.com/2vigfpd.jpg

Hi, thanks for all the changes, but I’ve noticed that the same people who have been banned are creating new accounts and continued spamming. Is it possible to block emails from creating new accounts? I’m just wondering, thanks for reading this.

Banned users can’t use the same email address to create a new account, but it is easy to make a new email address and so they can make a new account. Now that we have a reporting system, we will look for repeat offenders and ban them by IP address.

Hello. I just wanted to say that the good/bad buttons are being abused and that many comments are disappearing. Also, I’m not sure if they all count, but when you click “bad”, you can press the button an Infinite amount of times. Almost 40 comments have been deleted on the most recent post right now. Thanks for your work.

We’ve solved the disappearing comments problem.
We let people click the good/bad buttons as much as they like, but their vote should only counted once. Try it, repeatedly click good or bad on a comment, then refresh the page. It should only be one off from where it started.
