Can You Spare Some Change?
I am writing this post using Q10, which if you haven’t heard of it, is a text editor that makes typewriter noises while you type. Which is awesome for everybody that isn’t sitting next to you.
Alright, seriously now, I would like to discuss some of the changes planned for MyLifeIsAverage.
Isn’t Christmas Over?
Right now there are lots of stories in the vote on submissions section that mention Christmas and the New Year, because the story queue has gotten quite long. We just finished writing a new algorithm which will sift through stories much quicker and will also (hopefully) improve the quality of stories making it to the front page. It gives registered users more of a say in which stories get published. What does this mean to you? Voting: If you have an account, log in before voting. You can still vote if you aren’t logged in, but it will count less. The stories: Should be fresher (i.e. there won’t be any Valentine’s Day posts in July).
Average Selects
Like McDonald’s chicken selects, except funnier… and more free. We will have a new section on the site which will feature a few hand-picked stories each day. These will be stories that we find extraordinarily average.
Spam
Spam is a canned meat product, which can be served fried. It is wildly popular in Hawaii and Guam. It does not belong on MyLifeIsAverage. To help cut down on the spam in the comments, we are adding the ability for you to report naughty users. After down voting a user’s comment, a link will appear which you can click to report the user. With great power comes great responsibility, so only use this power for good.
Mobile Site
Ever since we launched MyLifeIsAverage back in May, people have asked for mobile apps. We have held off, because we thought it was more important to focus on fixing the basics first. Now that the site is stable (more or less) we want to make MLIA available on mobile devices. Rather than make an iPhone app, which only iPhone users can use, we were thinking about making a mobile version of the website. That way, anybody with internet on their phone will be able to access the site.
The Podcast
The podcast is now available on iTunes. Please subscribe. We are still taking questions for MLIA co-founder Guru Khalsa on the hotline. (Guru Khalsa says: “I would like to answer at least one question from someone with a ridiculously awesome accent. Fake the accent if you have to. It might even be funnier that way…”) Please submit your questions before Tuesday, February 9th.
Also, if you use Firefox and consider yourself a hardcore MLIA fan, consider getting the official MLIA Firefox persona which is available here.
Giving registered users more say: Great!
Handpicked, average stories: Great!
Eliminating spam: Great!

Fantastic. Thank you guys so much for listening to us MLIAers. I couldn’t have asked for much better.

Oh, also, MLIA isn’t letting me post. Was Circafan reported?
I feel like many people are going to report others not for spam, but for being naughty. This is who I am, okay? *sniffle*

Looks like you managed to comment on the most recent story.
We haven’t disabled any users for spamming… yet.
If a user gets lots of reports, we will take a look at their comment history ourselves before taking any action, so as long as you aren’t being spammy or posting links you should be ok. amirite.net?

Thanks. I noticed that my phone was letting me comment so I restarted my computer and everything’s better now.
You’re funny, but that ending still made me cringe.
I hope you’re a pervert or else you might be banning me a couple times in the near future.

This isn’t average at all, amirite.net ?
Just kidding. Why do you allow so many un-average posts to go up?
And btw, do you read the comments section?
Anyway. Have good day now, me see yhuu.

Not necessarily, but possibly.

Thanks! These seem like some helpful improvements. My only concern is – I’m an avid commenter, and us commenters (I think I’m speaking for most of us here) tend to curse at times, and make some sexual comments – all in jest, of course. Just to be clear; is the reporting only going to happen if a comment is “badded” to a certain point? Or will a commenter have the ability to “bad” someone, and then immediately report them?
howxprofound
February 5, 2010 at 5:09 pm
You can “bad” someone and immediately report them. Although getting reported doesn’t do anything, in and of itself, we will review the comments of users who are frequently reported by other users. We realize that the occasional profanity is appropriate and, at times, hilarious, but we don’t want this to turn into 4chan. In any case, we won’t be running around playing whack-a-mole with the mod hammer.

Also, I use my phone to go on MLIA all the time. My phone gives me the option to view in Mobile View, which makes everything put together and I can’t see who’s replying whom. Will this be different?
Cruton
February 5, 2010 at 5:17 pm
Yes. On the mobile site the page will render properly in your phone’s browser, so you won’t have to use Mobile View.

I wanted to let you know that all of us MLIA Commenters are hot for you. That is all.
PS. Especially me. I want you.
Circafan

Not me. I’m not hot for you. Probably because I’m a guy. Don’t take it personally.

Hey, sorry, not to rush you guys, but could you guys put the “report the user” button up first? And soon? The trolls seem to be trying to get one last “hurrah” in and it’s driving us nuts. But the changes sound great. Thanks!

Also, could you guys add a thing that recognizes email addresses of those who have been banned to make it slightly more difficult for them to just make a new account after being banned? Sorry, not trying to add to your work load…
PERFECTLYpar
February 6, 2010 at 9:58 pm
Actually, is there a way for the site to recognize computers? Sorry, not very tech savvy, but could you use the thing that remembers you after you log on and shut down the computer to recognize if someone who was banned is trying to make a new account even with a new email address?

Have you ever considered releasing the source code of MLIA as Free Software? If you would consider this, it would be AWESOME… errr… I mean… average.

This is getting ridiculous. Someone is spamming ‘heil hitler’ on every comment. Can’t you do something about this?

February 9, 2010 at 7:47 pm
One rather annoying thing I’ve noticed on MLIA is that not just me, but lots of other people don’t seem to be able to create accounts.
When you register, the first time, you get a 500 server error, and thereafter, the username is taken. Basically, the server manages to register the user, but somehow the 500 server error prevents the activation e-mail from being sent.
Could you perhaps just have a link to re-send the activation e-mail? I’d really like to be able to comment on stuff…
Thanks!

I just have one question regarding all of these changes to MLIA: When will they be taking place?
All of these changes sound fantastic, and definitely will benefit the site greatly. But right now there are a few commenters who are kind of spamming everything up, so it would be much appreciated if we could activate the Report a User thing soon, so that way something could be done and the comments could once again be peaceful.
Thank you for blogging! It’s nice that you guys have a blog so that we can keep up to date with what’s happening, rather than just watching it happen without understanding.

Hi I’m just reading this now, almost a month after this was posted, and I’m wondering when these changes will be made? I just really, really want the mobile version because I can access MLIA, but I can’t comment. I was just wondering if these things were still being worked on. Thanks!

Wow, I didn’t know MLIA had a blog. XD
I’ve can read MLIA on my phone, but it’s more fun to comment. It doesn’t let me comment from my phone, though. I have an old phone without a huge keyboard, just one with the number keys. When I try to comment, what I wrote seems to just disappear, and then if I go back to check, it isn’t there. Did you already fix that?

Hi
There is a web based app store called Open App Market (http://openappmkt.com/) and they host free apps (you just sign up for it like any other member), so hopefully, you could just modify the old MLIA App and put it on there.
Thanks
